Knowing the different classifications of fire extinguishers and their use-case can appear tricky, on the surface. The divisions are worth knowing, given that fire protection guidelines are mandated by strict code.

Fire extinguisher classification is actually quite simple. Extinguishers are divided based on the specific agents they use and the class of fire they put out. Here are the classes:

Class A: These fires are common in both residential and commercial settings and include everyday materials like trash, rubber, plastics, paper, cloth and wood. Class A fires occur everywhere these materials are found.

Class B: This class of fire is caused by flammable liquids and is known to spread very quickly. Class B fires occur commonly in commercial and industrial settings and are fueled by gas, oil, paint, solvents, and other synthetic and oil-based products.

Class C: These electrical fires are caused by power surges and sparks from equipment like wiring, motors, and appliances. They often start out of sight and are hard to reach. Once the electricity is cut off, the fire changes to another class.

Class D: These fires occur in industrial settings where combustible metals are used. Aluminum, sodium, and magnesium are just a few of the metals that are start Class D fires.

Class K: “K” equals kitchen. Class K fires occur in commercial kitchens and are caused by cooking greases and oils. These fires have high risk of re-flash, and wet chemical agents are required to extinguish them.

Fire codes are upheld through the use of fire inspections, and the penalties for building owners who don’t comply are severe. But choosing the right fire extinguisher is about more than just compliance – it’s about safety.
